Local Law 126 - Parapet Inspections

The New York City DOB has become more stringent in recent years, leading to an increase in required inspections, an example of this being the newly introduced parapet inspections. The New York City Administrative Code Section 28-301.1.1 states that parapets now require annual inspections to ensure that they are in a safe condition This addition to the New York City codes was due to the recent occurrences of parts of parapets falling off buildings and causing deadly injuries to those walking by. These parapet inspections were further elaborated on in 1 RCNY ยง103-15. This document details how the inspections must be conducted by a qualified professional who has the ability to identify possible dangers with a parapet. Possible issues include loose bricks, cracks, spalling, unstable appurtenances, and various other conditions that can lead to unsafe conditions. Buildings that are undergoing a FISP inspection are exempt as inspection of the parapet will be accounted for in that report.
